Gutters are the least glamorous system on your house and the one that quietly protects everything else: siding, windows, foundation, crawlspace. In the Tigard and Portland area the design problem is specific. We do not get dramatic cloudbursts so much as months of sustained rain, punctuated by a few storms that dump serious water fast, and by fir and maple debris that clogs undersized systems exactly when they are needed. The sizing question homeowners actually ask us, five inch or six inch, has a real answer, and it depends on your roof, not on a national default. Here is how we size a system, and the installation details that matter more than brand names.
1. How gutter sizing actually works
A gutter is sized to the roof area draining into it, the pitch of that roof (steeper roofs shed water faster), and the local rainfall intensity used for drainage design. Each downspout then has to carry its share of that water to the ground. When a system overflows at the eave in a hard rain, the diagnosis is one of four things: too little gutter capacity, too few or undersized downspouts, wrong slope, or a clog. Sizing fixes the first two on the day of installation.

Our default in this area: five inch handles most single-story ranches and modest two-stories fine. We spec six inch with 3x4 downspouts on large or steep roof planes, on long runs served by few downspouts, and on any house sitting under mature firs, because the capacity margin is what buys you time between cleanings. Upsizing the downspouts alone is often the single best capacity upgrade on an existing system.
3. Downspouts and discharge: where Tigard homes actually fail
Most of the water problems we trace in Tigard and the surrounding area are not gutter failures; they are discharge failures. Downspouts that dump at the foundation corner, splash blocks aimed at the neighbor's fence, buried drains that silted shut a decade ago. Oregon's plumbing code prohibits draining roof water onto adjacent property, and municipal stormwater rules in Washington County jurisdictions govern where roof drains can tie in. The rule of thumb that keeps crawlspaces dry: get roof water at least several feet away from the foundation, onto grade that slopes away, or into a functioning storm connection. If your crawlspace smells like a pond in February, start at the downspouts, not the roof.
4. Installation details that outlast the material choice
- Slope: roughly a quarter inch of fall per ten feet toward the downspout. Flat gutters hold standing water and grow moss and mosquitoes.
- Hidden hangers into the fascia at close spacing, tightened up in snow and ice country. Spike-and-ferrule installs work loose within years.
- Seamless aluminum runs formed on site: fewer joints, fewer leaks. Every seam and end cap sealed.
- Flashing behind the gutter so water that overshoots the drip edge cannot reach the fascia. Rotten fascia is the tell of a missing gutter apron.
- Guards chosen for fir needles if you are under conifers; the wrong mesh becomes a clogged roof extension. Guards reduce cleanings, they do not end them.
5. When to replace instead of repair
Persistent overflow after cleaning, seams that reopen every winter, pulling hangers, rusted steel or crushed sections, and fascia rot behind the gutter line are replacement signals. And if a roof replacement is anywhere on your horizon, sequence the gutters with it; doing them together protects the new drip edge detail and saves a mobilization. A quick note on cost logic, since gutters are often bid as an afterthought: the gutter package on a typical house is one of the smallest line items in an exterior project, while the damage a failed system causes, rotted fascia and rafter tails, stained siding, saturated crawlspaces, settled foundation corners, sits among the largest repair categories we quote. Sizing up a gutter or adding a downspout at install time is trivially cheap insurance against every one of those, which is why we would rather lose a bid than spec a system we know is marginal for the roof above it.
